Shinkansen Luggage Rules (2026): Size Limits, Reservations, and Fees

Quick answer: The Shinkansen luggage size limit is based on the total of your suitcase’s length, width, and height. A bag measuring 160 cm or less in total normally needs no special luggage reservation. A bag measuring more than 160 cm and up to 250 cm is “oversized baggage” and requires a compatible reserved seat on the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen. Baggage exceeding 250 cm cannot be brought on board.

There is no extra baggage charge when you reserve the correct seat in advance. If you bring oversized baggage onto one of the designated Shinkansen routes without a reservation, you may be charged ¥1,000 including tax and told by the train crew where to store it.

Do not confuse the Shinkansen measurement with an airline’s checked-baggage allowance. JR uses the actual total of all three external dimensions, not the “24-inch,” “26-inch,” or “28-inch” product label printed by a suitcase company.

What Is the Shinkansen Baggage Allowance?

JR’s general carry-on allowance permits each passenger to bring up to two pieces of baggage. Each item must meet all of the following limits:

• Weight of 30 kg or less per item
• Total length + width + height of 250 cm or less
• No single length exceeding 200 cm

Personal items such as handbags, umbrellas, and walking sticks generally do not count toward the two-piece limit. The allowance does not guarantee that two large suitcases will fit comfortably near your seat. You remain responsible for lifting, controlling, and safely storing your belongings.

Which Shinkansen Lines Require an Oversized-Baggage Reservation?

The advance reservation rule for luggage measuring more than 160 cm applies to these four Shinkansen lines:

• Tokaido Shinkansen: Tokyo–Nagoya–Kyoto–Shin-Osaka
• Sanyo Shinkansen: Shin-Osaka–Okayama–Hiroshima–Hakata
• Kyushu Shinkansen: Hakata–Kumamoto–Kagoshima-Chuo

Are the Rules Different on JR East Shinkansen Trains?

Yes. JR East states that reservations are not accepted for its designated luggage-storage spaces. The spaces are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis.

This applies to routes including:

• Akita Shinkansen
• Yamagata Shinkansen
• Joetsu Shinkansen
• Hokuriku Shinkansen

Some trains have dedicated luggage areas, while others have limited or different storage. If the luggage area is full, smaller bags may need to go at your feet. In other words, “Shinkansen luggage reservation” does not mean the same thing everywhere in Japan. Confirm both the railway operator and the individual train.

What Is a Seat With an Oversized Baggage Area?

On the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen, selected reserved seats are sold with access to an oversized baggage area. These are usually seats in the last row of an eligible reserved car, with luggage space behind them.

When you reserve one of these seats:

• You receive a normal assigned seat.
• You may use the designated space behind the last row.
• The area can be shared with passengers in the neighboring eligible seats.
• The price is the normal reserved-seat or Green Car fare.
• No separate baggage reservation fee is added.

The space behind a last-row seat is not automatically public luggage storage. If the car designates it as an oversized baggage area, it is for passengers holding the corresponding seat reservations.

Large baggage can also reduce how far a last-row seat reclines. Pack and position your suitcase with consideration for the passengers sharing the area.

What Changed With the Deck Baggage Compartments?

Some 16-car Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen trains have deck compartments near the doors. Historically, these lockable compartments were connected to specific seat reservations.

JR Central and JR West now state that, from July 1, 2025, some of these deck compartments are being offered as luggage storage that can be used without a prior reservation on a trial basis. The same official guidance continues to tell passengers carrying baggage over 160 cm to reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area.

Compartment size is limited. JR West lists maximum dimensions of approximately 80 × 60 × 50 cm for an upper compartment and 80 × 60 × 40 cm for a lower compartment. A contactless transportation IC card may be needed for a lock, and some cards or mobile devices may not work.

This trial arrangement and the available cars can change, so check the current official page shortly before travel.

How to Reserve a Shinkansen Seat for Oversized Luggage

You can reserve an eligible seat through services such as:

• SmartEX or the EX reservation service
• JR-West Online Train Reservation
• JR Kyushu Train Reservation
• A reserved-seat ticket vending machine
• A JR ticket office
• An eligible Japan Rail Pass reservation service

When booking online or at a machine, look for wording such as:

• Seat with an oversized baggage area
• Seat with an oversized baggage compartment

Because the deck-compartment trial can affect what appears on a particular system, prioritize a clearly labeled seat with an oversized baggage area when your bag is over 160 cm.

At a ticket office, show your suitcase measurements and say:

“I have oversized baggage. I need a seat with an oversized baggage area.”

Eligible seats are limited and can sell out during weekends, cherry blossom season, Golden Week, summer holidays, and the New Year period. Like other reserved seats, they normally become available one month before departure. Book when your itinerary is fixed.

Does an Oversized-Luggage Reservation Cost Extra?

No. When you correctly reserve an ordinary reserved seat or Green Car seat with an oversized baggage area, there is no extra luggage fee. You still pay the normal tickets required for the Shinkansen trip.

If you board the Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu, or Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen with a bag measuring more than 160 cm without the required reservation, the crew may:

• Charge a ¥1,000 baggage fee, including tax
• Tell you where the bag must be stored
• Prevent you from using the reserved area behind the last row
• Ask you to reserve another train if suitable space is unavailable

Paying ¥1,000 is not a shortcut that guarantees luggage space. The fee applies because the correct reservation was not made.

Where Do You Put Luggage That Is 160 cm or Less?

A bag with total dimensions of 160 cm or less normally does not require a special reservation. Depending on its size, weight, and the train, you may store it:

• On an overhead luggage rack
• In the space at your feet
• In an available deck luggage area
• In another location specified by the train crew

On N700 Series trains commonly used for Nozomi, Mizuho, and Sakura services, the overhead rack is approximately 42 cm deep. JR’s example indicates that a bag around 80 × 50 × 30 cm may fit, provided it is stable and can be lifted safely.

In an Ordinary car, a bag around 55 × 40 × 25 cm—120 cm in total—may fit at your feet, although actual space depends on your body, seat, and the bag’s shape. Green Car seats have footrests, so overhead storage is generally more practical.

Do not place luggage in an aisle, doorway, emergency area, another passenger’s legroom, or a reserved area that does not belong to your seat.

What if you cannot lift the suitcase?

Do not attempt to lift a heavy suitcase above other passengers if you cannot control it safely. JR recommends reserving a seat with an oversized baggage area when a bag’s shape or weight makes the rack or foot space impractical, even if its total dimensions are 160 cm or less.

Train crew may help when their other duties permit, but assistance cannot be guaranteed during busy boarding and departure periods.

Is a 28-Inch Suitcase Oversized on the Shinkansen?

Not always. “28-inch” usually describes one part of the suitcase, not the total of all three dimensions. Two products sold under the same marketing size can fall on opposite sides of the 160 cm limit.

Examples:

• 75 × 50 × 30 cm = 155 cm: not oversized under the 160 cm rule
• 78 × 52 × 32 cm = 162 cm: oversized and requires a compatible reservation on designated routes

Measure the packed suitcase yourself, including wheels and fixed handles. Do not rely only on the store listing.

Do Carry-On Suitcases Need a Reservation?

A typical airline carry-on suitcase is well under 160 cm in total and therefore needs no oversized-baggage reservation. Store it on the overhead rack or at your feet without blocking another passenger.

However, “carry-on” is an airline label rather than a JR category. Measure unusual hard cases, equipment cases, or expandable bags after packing.

What About Strollers, Instruments, Sports Equipment, and Bicycles?

The oversized-suitcase reservation rule does not automatically apply to strollers, musical instruments, sports equipment, or similar recreational items, even when their dimensions exceed 160 cm. They must still be safely packed and stored without blocking aisles or doors.

If you want to use a reserved oversized baggage area for one of these items, reserve the corresponding seat. Strollers may be brought on board without folding where space allows, but you remain responsible for keeping them secure.

Bicycles must generally be folded or disassembled and placed completely inside a dedicated bicycle bag. Exposed wheels or frames are not permitted on ordinary trains.

What if the Oversized-Baggage Seats Are Sold Out?

JR recommends reserving the train immediately before or after your first choice. Do not book a normal seat and plan to leave the suitcase in an aisle or behind someone else’s seat.

Your practical alternatives are:

• Choose another departure with an eligible seat
• Divide belongings into smaller manageable bags
• Send the suitcase to your next hotel
• Leave unnecessary luggage with your accommodation, if permitted
• Use a station locker or staffed storage counter

What if You Miss the Train You Reserved?

Depending on the ticket, a traveler who misses a reserved train may sometimes use a non-reserved seat on a later service. That does not mean oversized baggage can follow you into a non-reserved car.

JR’s official guidance states that if you miss a train with your reserved oversized-baggage seat, you need another reserved-seat limited express ticket with a compatible baggage area or compartment for the later train. If your plans change before departure, modify the reservation before boarding.

Can You Reserve Oversized-Baggage Space With a Japan Rail Pass?

Japan Rail Pass users can generally reserve an eligible seat without a separate luggage surcharge when the train and seat are covered by the pass. Some booking methods and regional passes have different online functions.

If the correct baggage-seat option does not appear, take the pass and suitcase measurements to a JR ticket office. Do not assume that holding a rail pass automatically creates a luggage reservation.

Can Suica Reserve Shinkansen Luggage Space?

No. An ordinary Suica balance is not a Shinkansen ticket or an oversized-baggage reservation.

A transportation IC card can be registered to certain Shinkansen e-ticket bookings for gate entry. It may also operate the lock on some deck luggage compartments. Those functions do not replace selecting the correct train and seat in the reservation system.

Should You Forward Your Suitcase Instead?

Luggage delivery is often more comfortable than moving a large case through station gates, elevators, crowded platforms, and narrow train aisles.

Consider forwarding your bag when:

• It exceeds the 250 cm train limit
• You have more luggage than you can control safely
• You are traveling with children or someone with limited mobility
• Your itinerary includes short connections
• Your hotel is far from the station
• Compatible baggage seats are sold out

If you send luggage from a hotel, confirm that the next property can receive it. The name on the shipping form should match the reservation, and you should allow enough delivery time.
